We lost not because we didn't play hard, i think we played a heck of a series, dominating the Bolts most of the time.

We are NOT a winner !

Worst of all we lose in the most painful way..by giving up a goal very late...like the loser we are..sadly.

Sometimes you can't explain that. Back when we were on top of our game we were the one who, in a close battle like yesterday, would finish on top, who would score that lonely goal to win 1-0.

For us it's impossible to do that, cause there is something missing in this team, something you don't teach...

....a winner !

Look at the Hawks. Yesterday they were in a hole like we were, going to St-louis down 1-3. They didnt play a great game last night, they were at moments vulnerable.

But you knew going into overtime that they would get the winner.

Why ?

Cause they are a winner ! Again you don't teach that, it's in your DNA.

i won't be surprise to see the Hawks win the next two.

I know what you're talking about Pierre. Going back to last year's series I think we outplayed them in games 3, 4, 5 & 7 but managed to lose 4 & 7 after totally outplaying them in those games. This year I think we outplayed them in games 1, 3, 4 & 5 and managed to only win game 3. We just don't know how to win anymore, or score goals or prevent then when the game is on the line. Part of that has been Bishop. He is so big and covers up so much of the net without having to move, that our guys grip the stick a little tighter and try to make the perfect shot. Sheahan had the opportunity to go high glove last night but elected to go five hole because he was intimidated by Bishop's size. Helm made a nice move, but didn't lift the puck up. Not sure what Larkin and Datsyuk were trying to do on their shots. We gave up some pretty good point blank opportunities from the slot trying to make the perfect back door pass. Tampa on the other hand do have the ability to score in all different kinds of ways, even when they're being totally outplayed like they were last night. Over the series we probably scored one pretty goal.... Nyquist's in game 4. All of the rest of them were kind of dirty. They, on the other hand scored about 6 or 7 tic tack toe kind of goals, which used to be our bread and butter. And of course their last goal was a garbage goal because Petr made a bad clear and we didn't pick up the guy standing in front of our net. Those types of goals have been our Achilles heel for quite some time now and it was almost fitting that it ended up being the series winning goal.

I had no issue at all with our effort level in any of the games. We gave it everything we had pretty much the whole series. However, execution was a big issue, especially on the powerplay. Why Richards and Green didn't change spots on that 5 on 3 so they could unload a onetimer is beyond comprehension. It doesn't take much of a hockey strategist to see that they had no opportunity to load up because both of them were on the wrong side. Why our coaches wouldn't make an adjustment there defies explanation. Pavel did hit a post on that PP, but most of the rest of it consists of Green and Richards passing it back and forth with neither of them in a position to shoot.

I think we lost to Tampa Bay the last 2 playoff series because they have a better goaltender than we do by a long shot and a better power play. We could put Howard and Mrazek in the goal at the same time and Bishop would bet them. The guy posses a trait that we lack for a while here....he is a winner, he elevates his game when required, he wins games his team had no business winning. We don't have anyone who single-handedly can take over games like that

The series difference makers was we had a deer in the headlight headcoach way our of his league ans comfort zone coupled with TB scoring on 5-3's and us generating 0-2 shots on ours and Bishop was a huge part of that.

Tampa also has a GM willing to make decisions needed to put the best team on the ice. Do you think Yzerman would be hoarding Jurco and Pulkinnen and Andersson after two coaches in a row see zero use for them?

Give it a rest. The last time Holland had a top 10 draft pick you were still in diapers. Smiley Smiley

Bishop may be a winner.....but he also covers up 90% of the net without having to move.

That's a fact, although the Wings' shooters leave a lot to be desired in terms of accuracy or execution. The breakaways were great examples of that where they simply shot the puck into him or tried to go 5-hole. Elevation over the pad was there for Sheahan, in particular, if he had moved a tiny bit to his left.

That issue of goalie size, equipment and a net size that has not changed in a 100 years has become a huge issue in terms of scoring in this league. There is an urgent need to reduce the size of the equipment because the goalies are getting bigger it seems. Still, you had a guy like Ken Dryden, back in the 70's, who looked like a bean pole compared to now and he was 6' 4", really big for a goalie back then. Still, there was a lot of net to shoot at.

The only other option is to increase the size of the net and I have mixed feelings about that. It may be the only answer if goalie equipment does not get reduced because you may as well put a sheet of plywood across the net nowadays…..and save millions! Or, get everyone to play the Red Wings' way, with a porous defence core when it really matters and the game is on the line!

newf....there's going to be a huge goalie equipment reduction next season. It should be interesting.

BUT

Goalies are so good these days with flawless technique that you shouldn't expect a drastic increase in goals scored.

They've been saying the equipment is going small for ten years.

That's true, and I will believe it when I see it. If they only tweak the equipment a little, it will not make too much difference to the number of goals being scored and that's a shame. The product suffers from the excessive emphasis on defence so something needs to change.
